Meet the Operational Board
Welcome to the Operational Board - Lucy Adams
I was very proud when asked to Chair the Operational Committee, following in the footsteps of a very diligent and professional Chair in Sandy Norris. The Operational Board are always looking at innovative ways to give tenants a home and provide a community in which they can be proud of and this will continue through my chairmanship at Havebury.
I hope to continue the good work of steering operations within Havebury by staying in touch with our tenants who are paramount in all decisions made, and also forging links with external agencies to better the circumstances of our tenants who may be experiencing hardships and challenges within their lives.
Two major messages really - firstly, don't be afraid to get in touch and tell us your experiences. I would like to reassure you that all the feedback we receive is taken into consideration when the 'big' decisions are made as well as the day to day happenings that take place at Havebury. Secondly, make sure to get involved. There are many ways to do this whether it is joining a committee or forum such as the Tenants' Forum.
Lucy Adams (Chair)
I have been a Director and Company Member now for six years. Within that time I have served on the Operational Board and the Audit and Risk Committee. Now I chair the Operational Board, I also sit on the Strategic Board. This gives me great insight into all aspects of the company and its dealings with tenants, partners and stakeholders. It will be a steep learning curve for me being Chair of the Operational Board, but hopefully the six years spent as being a Director and member will hold me in good stead to make sure the Operational Board continue its commitment in making sure Havebury fulfils its obligations to tenants as well as offering services to those who may find themselves in need of a little extra support.
Clive Gardner (Vice Chair)
I joined the Havebury Board in September 2013, and was re-appointed for a further three years a the AGM in October 2016. As well as my position in the Strategic Board, I am also an Independent Non-Executive Director and Vice-Chair of the Operational Board here at Havebury.
I am now a non-practicing solicitor having retired from full-time work in 2011, but now occupying the detailed non-executive positions. My previous roles have included being a Non-Executive Director and Chair of the Remuneration Committee at Julian Support Limited, and being a Governing Body Member, Chair of the Patient Experience Safety and Quality Committee Engagement Panel and a Member of the Audit and Risk Committee and the Remuneration Committee at the Governing Body North Norfolk (and Broadland) Clinical Commissioning Group.
Having been involved in the sector as a lawyer for a number of years and as a former board member and chair of a Leeds inner city HA it seemed sensible to use my skills at Havebury. I have a strong sense of social purpose and believe that I should contribute if I can.
I have two children who are both grown up; one is a lawyer and the other is a psychologist. I'm a Sailing Instructor (RYA qualified) and volunteer at Nancy Oldfied Trust teaching disadvantaged/disabled children adults to sail. I'm an enthusiastic racer of boats on the Norfolk Broads and an interest in all things that float and have a sail.
I joined the Board in 2013, and became Vice-Chair in 2016 (when I also joined the Operational Board). I served on the Audit and Risk Committee for 2 years (and through that I am the Board’s Health & Safety champion). Since May 2016 I have also chaired Havebury Homes Ltd.
I am a Chartered Surveyor, semi-retired after 40 years in the commercial property industry. My career included roles as Property Investment Director of Norwich Union (now Aviva), and Development and Investment Director of Chartwell Land plc (the property company arm of Kingfisher plc – now best known as the company behind B&Q and Screwfix)
When I retired I wanted to maintain some interests in the property industry. I enjoy working with the team at Havebury and I believe that my experience in development, financing, and property management helps me contribute to Havebury’s Board. I would add that I was born into a council house in mid-Wales, and I think it is important to maintain a strong and healthy social and affordable housing sector.
I am married with 3 grown up children who are all great! My interests include golf, travel, and DIY – particularly carpentry.
I was appointed to the Operational Board of Havebury in June 2015, following four years as an independent member of the Scrutiny Panel. I have worked in local government for over 35 years and have extensive experience in housing, including housing management, strategic housing and homelessness, development, community development and children’s issues. My last role was as Head of Environmental Health and Housing for St Edmundsbury Borough Council. I am currently a Housing Consultant mainly working with local authorities to help them improve their housing services. I am also a Board Member for Cambridge Housing Society and the internal auditor for a local parish council. For over 15 years I was a member of the Eastern Regional Board of the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) including holding offices as Chair, Financial Lead and membership Officer. I am also a Fellow of the CIH.
During my career, I have worked closely with Havebury. After leaving full-time employment to focus on my priorities, I still had a passion for housing and wanted to give something back to the profession I had been committed to for such a long time, and to continue to contribute to leading and shaping the future of an innovative and successful housing association, Havebury, in what are challenging times for the sector.
I have been married for 33years and we are both very keen amateur wildlife photographers. We are also extensive travellers, especially to Africa, where we have our own land-rover which enables us to spend time photographing in the ‘bush’. I also love gardening, and when not travelling, find sanctuary in my own garden.
David Lockwood (Non Voting Member)
I am a former Suffolk County Councillor and former St Edmundsbury Borough Councillor. I'm now retired and sit as a Magistrate in Kings Lynn. Whilst at Suffolk County Council, I have chaired Social Care, Development & Control, Rights of Way, Suffolk Health Scrutiny and Great Yarmouth and Waveney Health Scrutiny Committees. At St Edmundsbury, I also chaired Development and Control, Commercial Services and was Mayor in 2003 and 2004. I sat on Havebury's Performance Panel for eight years as a St Edmundsbury Councillor and joined the Performance and Scrutiny Panel as an independent member in 2011.
Sandy Norris - Tenants' Forum Representatives (Non Voting Member)
I am currently the Tenants' Forum representative on the Operational Board and have been a Board Member at Havebury for nine years. In October 2016, I stepped down as Chair of the Operational Board and Vice-Chair of the Strategic Board, respectively.
Within my nine years at Havebury, I have played major roles in both the Operational and Strategic Boards, as well as also Chairing the Tenants' Forum and sitting on the Neighbourhood Investment Panel and Complaints Panel. I have always taken a keen interest in Havebury from both a business and a tenant services perspective.
Before getting involved with Havebury, Sandy was a Nurse in the Women’s Royal Airforce, and also worked in the British High Commission in Nairobi firstly in the Passport Section and then as PA to the Defence Advisor.
