| The Old Maltings, Bury St Edmunds |
27 July 2010: Havebury, working in partnership with Baker Construction, has submitted plans to convert The Old Maltings in Mildenhall Road, Bury St Edmunds into 35 one and two bedroom flats and maisonettes.
The Grade II listed building has been empty for more than 15 years.
The architects for the project, MLT of Bury St Edmunds, worked closely with St Edmundsbury Borough Council and English Heritage to ensure the development plans respected the original building and remained sympathetic to its surroundings.
Havebury also consulted the Mildenhall Road Residents’ Association which was keen to see the building brought back into use. Residents in the area also had chance to view plans of the proposals.
Head of Development at Havebury, Dennis Heath, said: “The Old Maltings has been deteriorating for many years. Our plans will give the building a new lease of life and a useful future rather than becoming an eyesore on this important route into the town.”
If planning permission is granted, building work will begin in October. Twelve of the 35 new homes would be available under the Shared Ownership scheme to help first time buyers onto the property ladder.
