Prince’s Trust programme to change Havebury tenants’ lives

Those aged between 16 and 25 who are not currently in employment, education or training are eligible to sign up for the free scheme taking place in January.  The 12-week course is being run in conjunction with West Suffolk College in Bury St Edmunds exclusively for Havebury tenants.

Karen Mayhew, Chief Executive of the affordable housing provider, explained that the programme will lead to a nationally-recognised Level 1 or 2 Prince’s Trust Certificate in Employability, Teamwork and Community Skills. Participants will also receive a Prince’s Trust completion certificate signed by HRH Prince Charles. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for our younger tenants who are feeling unmotivated and without a clear direction in their lives,” she said.

“The programme will help participants develop the skills they need for success in work or education.  They can choose what to learn and how to learn it whilst gaining in confidence and making plans for their future.”

She added: “We have been working in partnership with West Suffolk College for some time to identify opportunities for our younger tenants. As a result, the college offered to run their January programme exclusively for our residents.  This is a wonderful opportunity for us as an organisation and our tenants and we are very grateful to the college.”

The Prince’s Trust programme, which does not affect Jobseeker’s Allowance, gives participants practical skills, helping them make new friends and improving their self confidence.  They will also receive careers advice and take part in community projects, fundraising and work placements while they also have the opportunity to go on a team-building residential stay.

Havebury, which has offices in Haverhill and Bury St Edmunds, is dedicated to serving both the existing and future housing needs of people in West Suffolk and parts of Cambridge.  A charity and not-for-profit association, it currently manages 6,000 homes.

Mrs Mayhew added: “Taster sessions will take place on January 18 and 19 with the course to start on January 23.  This programme really does have the potential to change the lives of those who take part, so we’d urge anyone eligible to get involved.”
