Successful Traineeship at Havebury

“I’ve grown into a better person”. A bold statement expressed by a jubilant Carly Hughes after successfully completing an 8 week Traineeship with Havebury Housing Partnership in February 2015.

Carly, 18, of Bury St Edmunds, had previously been studying a Childcare course at the West Suffolk College before declaring an interest of experiencing work life.

Havebury and West Suffolk College had then organised an 8 week traineeship, which Carly saw as being a perfect opportunity to embark on. “I wanted to get out and actually start working, but unfortunately I didn’t have any qualifications or work experience. So for me, a Traineeship was the best option to get some work experience that could help build my future.”

After securing the placement, Carly had quickly settled down in the working environment by taking up the role as an Administration Officer for Havebury’s Learning & Employment team. This role allowed her to take up many duties including the analysing of tenant/occupant profiles to determine appropriate targeting and collating and updating software. Carly had also carried out more unique duties such as regular property site visits – something that she would never have experienced through a regular training course.

“I don’t think there was a single thing that I disliked! Of course, there were things that I found tedious, but you’ll find that in every job you do, so I had to just get on with it. However, on the whole I enjoyed everything regarding my Traineeship and I wouldn’t change anything about it.”

Carly finished the Traineeship with high praise for Havebury adding, “I would just like to thank Havebury for giving me the opportunity to complete my Traineeship with them and also to thank all the Havebury staff for being lovely and making me feel so welcome.” She will now search for a new job or apprenticeship, recognising the rise in apprenticeship opportunities across West Suffolk.

Lisa Abery-Henning, the Learning & Employment Advisor at Havebury, held high regard and recognition of Carly’s impressive contribution over the course of the 8 week Traineeship stating; “Carly has been an asset to the Team during her time here at Havebury. She is a very conscientious and approachable person and I know she will excel in whatever career she chooses. I will truly miss Carly’s positive attitude.”

When questioned about future apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities, Lisa explained, “We have apprenticeships and/or traineeships available from time to time; remember to look at our vacancies. It is always advisable to speak to your college to help you with your applications.”
