International Literacy Day – Havebury to celebrate in style

We want you to help us celebrate International Literacy day at Haverhill library on the 6th of September from 10am.

Are you local to the Haverhill area with a child under 18 months?

Children under 18 months are welcome to join in the ‘Baby Bounce’ session in the library from 10am. From 10.30 children of all ages are welcome to enjoy a story being read by Havebury.

After story time we would love for you to stay and help your little people colour in their own Havebury home for your chance to win a £30 voucher of your choice (terms and conditions apply) and have their design featured in the Winter edition of Havebury News. Find out who won here.

Not only that but the first 15 children in attendance will be gifted a goody bag from Havebury – what a way to celebrate International Literacy Day!

Why is reading so important?

There is no more important activity for preparing your child to succeed as a reader than reading aloud together. Fill your story times with a variety of books. Be consistent, be patient, and watch the magic work.

It’s no secret that activities at home are an important supplement to the classroom, but there’s more to it than that. There are things that parents can give children at home that the classrooms cannot give.

You may go through a period when your child favors one book and wants it read night after night. It is not unusual for children to favor a particular story, and this can be boring for parents. Keep in mind, however, that a favorite story may speak to your child’s interests or emotional needs. Be patient. Continue to expose your children to a wealth of books and eventually they will be ready for more stories
