Working with Suffolk Recycling and Suffolk Council we want to help you to avoid and prevent fly-tipping.
You have a legal responsibility, or Duty of Care, to make sure that all waste disposal is correct. This can be from your own home or from your business.
You could face prosecution and a fine of up to £5,000 if your waste ends up fly-tipped.
Always check your waste is being disposed of by a registered waste carrier, otherwise you risk your waste being fly tipped. You can check the register of waste carriers on the EA website here.
Who pays for fly-tipping?
We all do. Every year, it costs Council Tax payers around £250,000 to clear waste dumped illegally on public land in Suffolk.
If people dump waste on private land, landowners have to clear it at their own expense.
Advice for householders, businesses and landowners
Householders
To make sure you give your waste to the right person:
- Never accept unsolicited offers to have rubbish taken away.
- Get more than one quote and expect to pay a reasonable fee.
- Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
- Ask for details of their waste carrier registration.
- Record the vehicle registration numbers of any vehicle used by a private waste carrier to take your rubbish away.
- Ask for a proper invoice and receipt.
Businesses
You must give your business waste to either:
- A Recycling Centre
- Your local council trade waste collection service
- A registered waste carrier: check the public register of waste carriers or call 03708 506 506
Landowners
You are responsible for clearing any fly-tipping found on private land if you are the one of the following:
- Land manager
- Land occupier
- Owner of the private property
Report fly-tipping to the relevant authority.
