Strategic Board

Strategic Board

Members of the Strategic Board are responsible for scrutinising Havebury’s operations.

Their work helps us to fulfil our long-term vision, and ensures we are consistently complying with governance and financial regulations.

The committee has seven members, each of whom has a particular skillset. When combined, this collective experience covers every aspect of our business and operations.

Members are also chairs of the board’s key sub-committees, most notably Operations and Audit and Risk. This ensures a holistic understanding of the business, and means there are clear lines of information flowing through the governance structure.

Strategic Board members are appointed for three terms of three years each, subject to periodic performance reviews. They are remunerated for their services. If you’d like to find out about Havebury’s other boards, click here.

“I joined the board in 2013, and became vice-chair in 2016, when I also joined the Operational Board. I served on the Audit and Risk Committee for two years; through that I am the board’s health and safety champion. Since May 2016, I have also chaired Havebury Homes Ltd.

“I am a semi-retired chartered surveyor with 40 years’ experience in the commercial property industry. My career included roles as property investment director of Norwich Union and development and investment director of Chartwell Land PLC.

“When I retired, I wanted to maintain some interests in the property industry. I enjoy working with the team at Havebury and I believe that my experience in development, financing and property management helps me contribute to the Board. I would add that I was born into a council house in mid-Wales, and I think it is important to maintain a strong and healthy social and affordable housing sector. I am married with three grown-up children who are all great! My interests include golf, travel, and DIY, particularly carpentry.”

“I joined the Strategic Board as a co-opted member in May 2018, having worked in the housing association sector since 1990. For 10 years I was a board member of a South Midlands housing group, serving as group chair for the last five years. My professional career was with a major financial institution where I specialised in financing housing associations. I have a keen interest in affordable rural housing issues, sport and the natural environment.”

“I am a non-practicing solicitor having retired from full-time work in 2011. I joined the Havebury board in September 2013. My previous roles have included non-executive director and chair of the Remuneration Committee at Julian Support Limited. I have also been involved with the North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group as a governing body member and chair of its Patient Experience Safety and Quality Committee Engagement Panel. I was also a member of the CCG’s Audit and Risk Committee and its Remuneration Committee.

“I was involved in the housing sector for a number of years as a lawyer, and served as a board member and chair of an inner-city housing association in Leeds. Therefore, it seemed sensible to use my skills at Havebury. I have a strong sense of social purpose and believe that I should contribute if I can.

“I have two children who are both grown up; one is a lawyer and the other is a psychologist. I’m an RYA-qualified sailing instructor and volunteer at the Nancy Oldfield Trust, teaching disadvantaged and disabled children and adults to sail. I’m an enthusiastic racer of boats on the Norfolk Broads and have an interest in all things that float and have a sail.”

“I am currently a senior advisor within the Bank of England. Prior to this role, I spent almost 30 years in the financial service industry based in London and New York. I have extensive experience in senior leadership positions across a wide variety of capital markets. Sectors of meaningful experience include leveraged buyouts, commercial property, distressed debt and emerging markets.

“In addition to my role with Havebury, I’m a member of the Advisory Board of the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership’s Investment Leadership Group and Impossible Objects, a 3D printing start-up company. I hold masters degrees from Harvard University, the London School of Economics and New York University, as well as an undergraduate degree from the George Washington University.

“I am passionate about the need for good affordable housing, education and healthcare for all in the United Kingdom. When I became aware of the opening on the board at Havebury, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to apply my professional background in real estate with my personal desire to strengthen affordable housing in the communities in and around Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill.”

“I am an independent management consultant specialising in business transformation. I’ve worked with a range of different organisations including local and national housing associations. My first independent piece of work was with Havebury in 2013 which introduced me to the organisation and housing. It’s a fantastic organisation with good, clear social values at its heart. It’s great to be able to support them in the capacity of a non-executive director on their Strategic Board and Operations Committee.”

“I was raised in Bury St Edmunds on the Westley Estate in what was then a local authority house. I first became involved with Havebury in the 1990s when I chaired a residents’ association. We worked very closely together to deliver real improvements for the whole estate.

“I am currently a Bury St Edmunds town councillor and also a borough councillor representing a large number of Havebury’s tenants. I am passionate about housing and ensuring that there is suitable housing to meet everyone’s needs.

“I have great respect and admiration for Havebury. When the opportunity arose to join the board I was very pleased when I was accepted. It is my ambition to ensure Havebury continues to deliver good quality, affordable homes for all.”

“I currently work as a PA for the NHS. Previously, I spent 16 years working in education as an inclusion officer, helping children who required both academic and emotional support. I have been a single parent to three boys (now men) for many years. The eldest two now work in management positions and the youngest is reading economics at St Catherine’s College in Cambridge. Whilst working and raising a family, I gained my degree with the Open University.

“Having spent many years supporting others and their families, I saw joining Havebury as a further opportunity to support and represent my fellow tenants.”

“I have an impressive track record of outstanding performance at senior levels in risk, transformational change, customer service and operations management over more than 30 years in the financial services industry. I led the Customer Proposition Integration Programme when NatWest and RBS merged in 2001. More recently, I was one of a very small cadre of female executives to lead the regulatory interface during a high profile industry payments systems failure. I hold an Operations Management MBA from Warwick University, am qualified in AML/STF and am an MSP practitioner in Programme Management. I am also a seasoned conference speaker, am media trained and have appeared on TV discussing the life and challenges of senior women in banking.

“Since leaving full-time City life, I have worked as an executive coach and mentor, become a business consultant, started working with a financial services recruitment company, been a non-executive director for a FinTech start-up and am now excited to be working with Havebury. Away from work, I am married to Martin and have a daughter, Ciara.”
