Strategic Board

Strategic Board

The Strategic Board was formed to reflect the greater Board scrutiny required of the business.

Behind the Strategic Board. The existing structure did not allow sufficient time to scrutinise both the operational delivery of services (to tenants and wider stakeholders) and the increasingly important strategic vision as the operating environment becomes more challenging. The reduction in grant rates and the rent reductions have significantly increased the risks and complexity of running a business such as ours and without the separation of scrutiny we could easily find ourselves facing governance or financial problems.

The Strategic Board comprises of 7 members with Ian Mashiter as the Chair – each member has a particular set of experiences and skills that when combined provides an understanding of every aspect of our current and future business risks and operational areas. Members are also Chairs of the key sub-committees of the Board (most notably Operations and Audit & Risk) ensuring a holistic view and understanding of the business as well as clear lines of information flow both up and down the governance structure. Members are appointed for 3 terms of 3 years (subject to periodic performance review) and are remunerated for their services. Want to find out about the other boards we have at Havebury click here.

Ian Mashiter (Chair)

Ian Mashiter (Chair)

I joined the Board in 2013, and became Vice-Chair in 2016 (when I also joined the Operational Board). I served on the Audit and Risk Committee for 2 years (and through that I am the Board’s Health & Safety champion). Since May 2016 I have also chaired Havebury Homes Ltd.

I am a Chartered Surveyor, semi-retired after 40 years in the commercial property industry. My career included roles as Property Investment Director of Norwich Union (now Aviva), and Development and Investment Director of Chartwell Land plc (the property company arm of Kingfisher plc – now best known as the company behind  B&Q and Screwfix)

When I retired I wanted to maintain some interests in the property industry. I enjoy working with the team at Havebury and I believe that my experience in development, financing, and property management helps me contribute to Havebury’s Board. I would add that I was born into a council house in mid Wales, and I think it is important to maintain a strong and healthy social and affordable housing sector.

I am married with 3 grown up children who are all great! My interests include golf, travel, and DIY – particularly carpentry.

“I joined the Havebury Board in September 2013, and was re-appointed for a further three years a the AGM in October 2016. As well as my position in the Strategic Board, I am also Vice-Chair of the Operations Committee at Havebury.

I am now a non-practicing solicitor having retired from full-time work in 2011, but now occupying the detailed non-executive positions. My previous roles have included being a Non-Executive Director and Chair of the Remuneration Committee at Julian Support Limited, and being a Governing Body Member, Chair of the Patient Experience Safety and Quality Committee Engagement Panel and a Member of the Audit and Risk Committee and the Remuneration Committee at the Governing Body North Norfolk (and Broadland) Clinical Commissioning Group.

Having been involved in the sector as a lawyer for a number of years and as a former board member and chair of a Leeds inner city HA it seemed sensible to use my skills at Havebury. I have a strong sense of social purpose and believe that I should contribute if I can.

I have two children who are both grown up; one is a lawyer and the other is a psychologist. I’m a Sailing Instructor (RYA qualified) and volunteer at Nancy Oldfied Trust teaching disadvantaged/disabled children adults to sail. I’m an enthusiastic racer of boats on the Norfolk Broads and an interest in all things that float and have a sail.”

“I am currently a Senior Advisor within the Bank of England.  Prior to the BoE, I spent almost thirty years in the financial service industry based in London and New York. I have extensive experience in senior leadership positions across a wide variety of capital markets. Sectors of meaningful experience include leveraged buyouts, commercial property, distressed debt and emerging markets.

In addition to my role with Havebury Housing Partnership, I’m a member of the Advisory Board of the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership’s Investment Leadership Group and Impossible Objects, a 3D printing start-up company.  I hold masters degrees from Harvard University, The London School of Economics and New York University as well as an undergraduate degree from the George Washington University.

I am passionate about the need for good affordable housing, education and health care for all in the United Kingdom.  When I became aware of the opening on the Board at Havebury Partnership, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to apply my professional background in real estate with my personal desire to strengthen affordable housing in the communities in and around Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill.”

For 10 years I was a board member of a South Midlands Housing Group, serving as Group Chair for the last five years. My professional career was with a major financial institution where for much of the time I specialised in financing housing associations. “I’ve been working as an independent consultant for the past 6 years for a range of organisations including social housing. My role has exposed me to working with a variety of landlords; small local organisations to large diverse national organisations with multiple subsidiaries.  Typical projects have included working with directors to set out and define future organisation visions and strategies to meet strategic objectives; such as reduced operating costs and value for money, scalability for business growth (including new stock, mergers and acquisitions) as well as improving provision of service to customers.  My post recent projects have been with a national housing association in delivering their new operating model to increase their operating margins, reduce annual business overhead costs by £12m per annum and annual expenditure by £20m per annum. Driven and tenacious, I handle challenges and complexity with confidence. I’ve excellent communication and interpersonal skills which allows me to engage with people at all levels. I’ve an ability to interpret varied and complex information, such as finances, management reports & recommendations, and strategies combined with an excellent understanding of the housing industry.”

I was raised in Bury St Edmunds on the Westley Estate in what was then a Local Authority house.  I first became involved with Havebury in the 90’s when I chaired a residents association and we worked very closely together, to deliver real improvements for the whole estate.  I am currently a Bury St Edmunds Town Councillor and also a Borough Councillor representing a large number of Havebury’s tenants.  I am passionate about housing and ensuring that there is suitable housing to meet EVERYONESneeds.  I have great respect and admiration for Havebury and when the opportunity arose to join the board I was very pleased when I was accepted.  It is my ambition to ensure Havebury continues to deliver good quality, affordable homes for all.

“I am joining Havebury’s Board in October 2019. I currently work as a PA for the NHS but previously spent sixteen years working in education as an Inclusion Officer, helping children who required both academic and emotional support.   I have been a single parent to three boys (now men) for many years – the eldest two now work in Management positions and the youngest is reading Economics at St Catherine’s College in Cambridge. Whilst working and raising a family, I gained my Degree with the OU and graduated last year.  I have spent many years supporting others and their families, and saw this as a further opportunity to support and represent my fellow tenants. This is all new to me but I am looking forward to the challenges the Havebury Board will give me.”

“I have an impressive track record of outstanding performance at senior levels in Risk, Transformational Change, Customer Service and Operations Management over a 30+ year period within the Financial Services Industry.  I have led the Customer Proposition Integration Programme when NatWest and RBS merged in 2001 and more recently was one of a very small cadre of female executives to lead the regulatory interface during a high profile Industry Payments Systems failure.  I hold the Operations Management MBA from Warwick University, am qualified in AML/STF and am an MSP practiser for Programme Management. I am also a seasoned conference speaker, media trained and appeared on TV discussing the life and challenges of senior women in banking.

Since leaving full time City life, I have continued as an Executive Coach and Mentor, become a Business Consultant, started working with a Financial Services recruitment company, been a Non Executive Director for a FinTech start up and am now excited to be working with Havebury as a Non Executive Director supporting the Audit & Risk Committee and Strategic Board.  Away from work, I am married to Martin, have a daughter, Ciara who teaches and performs in Musical Theatre, is a semi professional musician and a club runner about to complete her 25th (and last!) marathon.”
