Solar panels are becoming a more common sight on homes across the UK, but we know there are still lots of questions and concerns around them.

Some residents may have had previous experiences with older systems or heard stories that have caused understandable worry. So, we wanted to take the opportunity to explain the benefits of solar panels and clear up some of the most common myths.

What are solar panels?

Solar panels (also known as Solar PV) capture energy from daylight and convert it into electricity that can be used in your home.

This means you can use the energy you generate during the day to help power things like lights, appliances and electronics, reducing the amount of electricity you need to buy from your energy supplier.

Any unused electricity can be exported back to the grid, and in some cases residents may be able to receive payments through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).

Benefits of having solar panels

  • Lower energy bills – Using the electricity your panels generate can help reduce your overall energy costs. While savings vary depending on usage, many households see a noticeable difference over time.
  • Potential payments for excess energy – If your system produces more electricity than you use, you may be able to claim money back through the Smart Export Guarantee by registering with an eligible energy supplier.
  • Better for the environment – Solar power is clean, renewable energy. By using it, you’re helping to reduce carbon emissions and support a more sustainable future.
  • Improving our homes – Installing solar panels helps improve the energy efficiency of our homes, supporting our goal to reach higher EPC ratings and future-proof homes for years to come.
  • Minimal maintenance – Modern solar panel systems require very little upkeep and are designed to last for many years.

Common myths

  • “Solar panels don’t work in the UK” – This is false. Solar panels work using daylight, not heat. Even on cloudy days, they can still generate electricity.
  • “They cost residents money” – This is false. The solar panel installations we offer are provided at no cost to residents, and there is no increase to rent.
  • “They cause roof damage” – This is false. Panels are installed by qualified contractors following strict safety and building standards. Roof condition is checked beforehand, and the panels are designed to protect your roof.
  • “They’re hard to maintain” – This is false. Solar panels have no moving parts and require very little maintenance. Any maintenance responsibility remains with us, not the resident.
  •  “Older solar panels caused lots of problems” – This is partly true. Some older systems did have issues, particularly around monitoring and maintenance. Today’s systems are far more reliable, better monitored, and installed to modern standards.

We understand this history may still affect how people feel, and that’s completely natural.

We know solar panels aren’t just about technology, they’re about trust, understanding, and feeling confident in decisions about your home.

Here is what some residents have to say about their solar panels:

  • “My solar panels are already generating and I’m noticing a difference in my electric bill.”
  • “It was all installed quickly and efficiently.”
  • “The workmen were great, very polite and the panels were installed quickly.”
