Materials containing asbestos were used in building works until 2000. These materials are completely safe as long as they are not damaged or disturbed.

What we will do

Law requires us to undertake an asbestos survey on all homes built before 2000.

These are carried out by our in-house surveyors and provide information on the location and condition of the asbestos. We will provide residents with a copy of these results.

We will inspect communal areas every year, for example, our blocks of flats.

Reinspection surveys may need to be carried out in your home, and we will get in touch with you if this is the case.

If the survey identifies asbestos that is in poor condition, we will arrange for it to be sealed or removed.

We may need to carry out a survey in your home prior to refurbishment works taking place. If this is the case, we will discuss and arrange this with you if it’s required.

If your home was built after 1 January 2000, we don’t need to carry out a survey.

What you need to do

Allow us access to undertake any inspections or works in your home.

Asbestos is a safe material if it remains undisturbed and sealed. If you wish to complete an alteration in your home, please complete a permissions application here.

If you suspect an item to be asbestos and damaged, please contact us, and we’ll arrange for an inspection to be carried out.

If you would like to contact us about asbestos in your home, call our Asbestos team on 0300 3300 900, choosing options 2, 5 and 2 or dialling extension number 7325 when prompted. You can find more information about asbestos on The Health and Safety Executive website.

  • Changes to asbestos management

We will need to return to some surveyed properties in the future to carry out re-inspection surveys or further refurbishment surveys. This will be done prior to any refurbishment work.

  • What if my property hasn't been surveyed?

In this instance, we may be unable to carry out maintenance or scheduled work such as fitting a new kitchen or bathroom. Please be assured that, if your property was built after 1 January 2000, a survey is not required. This is because the use of asbestos was prohibited in 1999.

  • Should I be concerned?

Materials containing asbestos in your home are safe as long as they remain undamaged and undisturbed. However, where a survey has identified materials that may contain asbestos, they should not be broken, sanded, cut or drilled.
