Tenant Stories: Marla

Marla lives in Bury St Edmunds with her husband Mark and dog Billy. She has lived in the same home for 17 years.

Marla explains; “When I moved into this house, I couldn’t believe my luck as I was in a little bungalow before. When I moved in it was a blank canvas, it took me a long time to get it how I want it, but it’s been a blessing.”

Things have been quite challenging for Marla for several years due to an autoimmune disease which affects her internal organs.

“Things have been difficult for me; I can’t work now due to my illness. Before my diagnosis, I worked at Becketts insurance, and I was there for 11 years. My condition came on suddenly and within 6 months I had to leave my job.”

Her illness makes it extremely hard for Marla to do everyday things like walk to the shops or even take Billy out, but she says Havebury have been great in helping her adapt her home.

“Havebury are very responsive to any repairs or adaptations I have requested. For example, they came and put slabs at the front of the property and an electrical socket so that I can charge my scooter outside. It’s been a life saver.”

Marla also talks about having her path widened. “I have steps up to the front of my home which isn’t good for the scooter, Havebury made the path around the house wider and turned the back step into a small ramp so I could get the scooter around the back of the house.”
